El Conquistador
It will not take long for any golfer to fall in love with the beautiful golf course of El Conquistador. Before you even press your first tee into the soil, you are treated with dazzling views of the Puerto Rican golf course.
The yardage can seem long at 6,662 from the back tees and 5131 from the front. This course requires the golfer to bring his best game. Once the player learns to lay off thinking about the location the course becomes more enjoyable.
The El Conquistador golf course has a Arthur Hills design and travels across significant changes in elevation. The views of the El Yunque rain forests emerald countryside or the sparkling blue waves of the Caribbean Sea crashing against the rising cliffs are absolutely breathtaking. Even without the excellent design of the course, golfers would be won over by the amazing scenery.
The 15th hole is the courses best perch and may even be the best perch in all Puerto Rico. Over-looking the coastline that drifts into a blue abyss it is a vision that becomes etched into the memory of any who have seen it. At the high altitude the fairway looks small but as you descend down the hillside you will realize it is one of the widest on the course.
The hills take advantage of the beautiful scenery, as well as being used for strategic design. Although it was unusual at the time it was built, El Conquistador has golfers at every level manage their own games off the tee. This course is not a driver seven iron. Perfect examples of this are holes 13 and 18.
Number 14 tee shot is a 339 yard par-4 and is pretty much a second chase at shot number one. A tight fairway drive and 200 yards of uphill slope is required to carry to the hills crest. Fade the ball a little too much and it is likely to end up at the base of the rough some fifteen yards below the fairway.
On the right of the 18ths open par4 is water and down the left fairway bunkers. Someone golfing here for the first time might not realize just how far left the fairway is.
Par-3 forth hole plays 178 yards off the back tee into a wide green. The landscape has a steep drop left and short of the green. Although the hole goes downhill, it plays into the wind.
